Call For Residents To Help On Action Days

Residents living in the Herlington area of Orton Malborne are being invited to help on a project to visually improve their community as part of action days commencing on Thursday 26 May 2011.

Cross Keys Homes and the SaferPeterborough partnership are holding the two, two-day action days on Thursday 26 May and Friday 27 May, and also on Thursday 2 June and Friday 3 June.
The action days will consist of removing graffiti, replanting flowerbeds, painting bollards, clearing rubbish and generally making the area more attractive.

Local schools are also being invited to join in and take part in a competition to design a new Herlington sign for the area.

Cross Keys Homes’ director of operations, Claire Higgins, said: “These action days are all about making a difference to where people live and also giving local residents the opportunity to talk to people representing those services that are so vital to the city, such as the police and the fire service, about what’s happening locally and those things that might be worrying them. There can be a whole range of concerns, for example anti–social behaviour in the area or a genuine fear of crime that might be being felt.

"We really hope to meet as many local residents that we can so that we can continue to make progress on our role as being more than just a landlord in the city by listening to what matters to people and doing something about it as well as improving the overall living environment for all residents."

Lisa Emmanuel, south area neighbourhood manager for the SaferPeterborough partnership, said: “The response from residents wanting to take part in the action days has been great and we look forward to helping the local community improve the area in which they live. The project has been supported by several organisations and a partnership approach to improving neighbourhoods strengthens the sustainability of the work we are undertaking.”

This community project is a multi-agency project in support of Cross Keys Homes’ promise known as a ‘local offer’ about improving services and working with other organisations to address particular local concerns. This project was identified by local residents who were keen to see the area improved.

The project will end with a street party event - ‘The Big Lunch’ - on Saturday, June 4 from 12 noon until 2pm, for all those who took part in the project to come together and celebrate. It is hoped the winning school will also be announced on the day.

Bourne band Powersurge need your text votes

TEXT votes are desperately needed to help a young rock band get through to the national final of a talent competition.

Bourne band PowerSurge failed to win the judges’ vote at the regional finals of the Live and Unsigned competition at Bedford Corn Exchange on Saturday last week - but they still have a chance of success.

The 16 acts which didn’t get through have been thrown a lifeline and must now battle it out to win the highest number of text votes from their fans.

Will Beavis, Ben Keast, James Bailey, Josh Henson and AJ Thomas, who are all 12 and 13, are currently at the top of the leaderboard and are hoping to win so they can take part in the final at London’s O2 Arena on July 23 and be in with a chance of winning a recording contract, festival slots and a UK tour.

The Work Club has been designed to be interactive with the majority of the input coming from you guys so that you can get the most out of it. We therefore recommend you bring along particular questions that you would like help with! Please bring along your CV’s as our expert from Coulter Elite Resourcing will be offering tips and advice to help you improve your CV.

Wendy Coulter from Coulter Elite Resourcing will be our guest this week. At the beginning of the session she will be talking to you about what employers are looking for and at the end of the session will be available to answer all questions and give CV advice.

Amy Marshall - Learner Engagement Administrator at Intraining

Amy Marshall was unemployed before gaining the opportunity to get back into work at Intraining as a Learner Engagement Administrator. Amy started on the 18 October 2011.

Intraining is a national organisation with a handle on local issues that is meeting the training and employability needs of employers and employees across the UK. They operate out of a network of 80 regional offices across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and enjoy long-standing relationships with employers, funding bodies and training providers across the UK. Meet Hannah Harding

Hannah Harding was unemployed for over 6 months before gaining the opportunity to get back into work at Opportunity Peterborough as a Team Assistant. Hannah started on the 22 November 2011.

“As a Team Assistant I am responsible for providing administrative services along with booking rooms for courses and meetings, this includes setting the rooms up before and after the meetings. I have to open up our two big meeting rooms. I then lay out the room in boardroom style. Also I get all the teas and coffees and any snacks that they might want. When the meetings are having their breaks, I go in and re do all the coffees and teas for when they come back in. I also answer the telephones and deal with issues and take messages.”

David Rae-Clarke - Assistant Technical Officer for Pathology at Peterborough City Hospital

When I got offered the Assistant Technical Officer position I felt as if I had won the lottery as the position was directly in the field of work that I wanted to go into.

Before hearing about the position, I had all but given up hope of finding a job working in a laboratory and felt that the only option left for me was seasonal work in the retail industry. Upon hearing that I had received the position, I was delighted and promised myself to make the most of the experience.

My role within the laboratory consists of me labelling, booking in, loading and unloading samples. Restocking and replacing items. Sterilising the work areas and equipment. Finding samples for more tests.

For the first week I was very nervous when I wasn’t being supervised and could hardly remember any of the scientist’s names. I would return home form work tired but happy. Nevertheless, I very quickly began to feel like part of the group, talking and joking more with the other scientist.

My supervisor (Jayne) has been continually supportive of me throughout my placement. She has made sure that I was never given tasks that she knew I couldn’t carry out and made sure to keep my work challenging.

This scheme is ideal for unemployed people who are enthusiastic about starting a career but have no or little work experience. The support you get both in the work place and from The Future Job Fund has been fantastic. As well as that, I have had the opportunity to undergo training programmes such as First Aid and Health and Safety. The scheme has made me far more confident about myself and my future.

When I first started my job at the library I thought it would be quite boring and I would gain no new skills. But now I think it is a brilliant place to work. I learn something new everyday, work with great people and meet various, different customers which completes the package.

Working with young children is the best part of my job. Learning their different reactions to different stories and activities is always fun.

The only negative I have in regards to the Future Jobs Fund is that the job is only for six months.

As you are aware, I have been offered full-time permanent work. I am due to start with Farsight as a CCTV operator.

You will also know (from my FJF employee manger) that I truly believe in the Future Jobs Fund initiative and feel very lucky and grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of it. Working with the Wildlife Trust for 4 months has defiantly improved my confidence and has helped me to gain and develop transferable workplace skills. I have no doubt in my mind that this placement has untimely led to me gaining full-time employment with Farsight.

I have really enjoyed my time spent with the Wildlife Trust, they offered fantastic training opportunities and tailored my work plan to suit my skills and areas of interest; for example, working with the Community Payback. I most enjoyed my time spent there because of all the wonderful (and unique) staff from across the 4 Counties.

Thank you very much for all the opportunities.

The Big Tidy Up volunteers came together to clean up the streets of Peterborough.

Volunteers were armed with litter pickers and bin bags for the week-long Big Tidy Up event, from 31 Jan to 4 Feb.

Not one empty can or discarded crisp packet escaped attention, as the volunteers left no stone unturned in their quest for city cleanliness.

It was Peterborough’s second Big Tidy Up event and was organised by Lee Wyer from the Future Jobs Fund team.

Lee issued an appeal for participants several weeks ago and was swamped with volunteers eager to take part in making their neighbourhoods cleaner places to live. The Parnwells and Werrington Big Tidy Ups were supported by some members of the Future Jobs Fund team.

Lee Wyer, event organiser said: “It was great to see people taking the time out to make a difference to the place where they live.”

“We had great fun getting involved with the local residents help them make their neighbourhoods a cleaner place to be.

Sophie Pinto, from the FJF team said “We found a lot of empty beer cans and other rubbish. Knowing that I have helped clean up a residential area has given me a great sense of pride.”

The Big Tidy Ups this year managed to fill well over 50 Bags with litter.

Jamie Wathen - Admin Worker at Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue

New Hope UK Charity & Their Events.

Railworld

One of the reasons the Future Jobs Fund in Peterborough has been so successful is because of the hard work of both the employees and employers.

One partnership that has seen the benefits of having Future Jobs Fund employees has been Railworld. Railworld was developed from the Nene Valley Railway (NVR), which opened in 1977. Since then it has been through many changes, but Railworld is now a fun and informative visiting attraction for the whole family.

Brian Pearce a representative from Railworld said “I can't imagine life without the help of our Future Jobs Fund employees. They have given so much to Railworld and have made a real difference.”

“They have recently helped with the building of a habitat for our wildlife and an interesting and exciting place for us all to learn about nature and our environment. As you can see from the pictures they have been real helping hand.”

One proud FJF employee’s parent said “I can't believe how much he likes it. He has never had a job before! He doesn't seem to stop talking about what he is doing. He has been taking pictures on his phone of the steps he has made and the crazy paving!! It makes it all worth while.”

Becky Cook, who is the Railworld FJF employees’ Employee Manager from the FJF team, said, “The Future Jobs Fund employees are making real difference at Railworld and it has been a real eye opener to the great work they have achieved in such a sort space of time.”

Felicity Martin – Participation Officer at PCC Children in Care

Felicity was unemployed for over a year before finding work as a Participation Officer at PCC Children in Care through the Future Jobs Fund scheme. Felicity started her new role on the 29th November.

As a Participation Officer I am responsible for:
· Ensuring the participation and involvement of service users in the planning, monitoring and reviewing of our services.
· Engaging with hard to reach young people within Peterborough
· Assisting with the co-ordination of projects
· Helping to maximise participation of young people in care
· Working directly with children and young people to ensure their views and ideas are heard.

I was very excited about starting my FJF job. It was a chance for me to support myself better, whilst being able to gain the right experience and skills with working with children and young people.

I have really liked working for the PCC Children in Care team and particularly get on well with my supervisor who is always offering me help and guidance.

The Future Jobs Fund scheme is a great initiative which offers you training and guidance whilst helping you get your foot in the door to further employment. I would definitely recommend this scheme as a great help to young unemployed people.

The Future Jobs Fund Jobs Fair

In Peterborough, Sustainability plays a big part within the Future Jobs Fund project. The key intention of the project, from a wider perspective, has been to ensure the project creates a lasting benefit for the community and a lasting legacy to the City.

With this in mind, Insiya Salam, Employer Engagement Manager for the Future Jobs Fund team, decided to organise a Jobs Fair in Peterborough specifically for our FJF employees in order to provide them with the opportunity to network with businesses and organisations from around the city. The event was held on December 10th at the Town Hall in Peterborough and 35 organisations attended the event. These organisations were made up of recruitment agencies, voluntary organisations, FE colleges and various employers including a number of the City’s top 50 employers such as B&Q, Royal Sun Alliance, IKEA and Travelex.

The Mayor of Peterborough attended the event and was very impressed with the outcome and said it ‘showed that there is a future within Peterborough for young people’. The Fair also attracted the attention of Steve Bowyer, Head of Economic Development at Opportunity Peterborough; and Richard Astle, Director of the Greater Peterborough Partnership (GPP).

The Jobs Fair would not have been possible without the help of the Future Jobs Fund team. It has been brilliant fun working for such a great team over the past six months, and I look forward to continue working with them over the coming months.

Calum McIntosh was a Project and Administration assistant at the PCC Children’s Services, within the Peterborough City Council. He has successfully gained full time employment for Wiltshire, where he will be testing buildings for asbestos and other hazardous materials.

When asked whether the FJF scheme helped him in anyway to secure his new job, he had this to say “The FJF did not directly help me secure a job however it helped me to gain confidence in networking, upon which I gained the relevant connections in obtaining the job.”

“I have learnt many great skills and experiences during my time with the FJF. Mainly on the training courses that were provided. I attended the first aid and business administration courses. The latter of which taught me about communication in the work place; verbally, written or by telephone manner.

“I would recommend the FJF to others as it gave me an opportunity to get into work when it was particularly hard to find one; it has also provided me with extra qualifications which always look good to future employers.”

MORE YOUNG PEOPLE HAVE FOUND WORK

MORE than half the long-term unemployed youngsters in Peterborough who joined the Future Jobs Fund scheme have found work.

In all, 53 percent of 18-24 year olds in the city who took up a role with the fund have made it into permanent employment.

Richard Cooper was unemployed for a year before being employed through the Future Jobs Fund as part of Peterborough City Council’s Care and Repair team. He is now working full time for Mears Ltd as a Customer Service Administrator.

He said “My computer and communication skills have improved so much I have gained experience working with customers and as part of a team within an office.”

All the Future Jobs Fund positions are focused on providing a benefit to the community, whilst also increasing job prospects.

Gary Conder, Future Jobs Fund Project Manager said, “The Future Jobs Fund scheme has opened lots of doors for Peterborough’s young people.”

The Future Jobs Fund is in its second phase, providing more young people with opportunities.

Martin Townsend – Office Junior at Sue Ryder Care

MartinTownsend was unemployed for 5 months before finding work as an Office Junior at Sue Ryder Care through the Future Jobs Fund scheme. Martin started his new role on the 22/11/10.

Getting this opportunity on the Future Jobs Fund scheme means “I will be able to get valuable work experience and training that will help me successfully gain permanent employment in the future.”

My main responsibilities as an Office Junior are imputing data from the paper records, maintaining the mail between the reception and office, and general admin duties, including photo coping and filing. I have particularly enjoyed making files for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) for the hospice.”

I have been working at the Future Jobs Fund now for just over a month. Before starting this job I was unemployed and on Jobseeker Allowance. Working here has given me the confidence to realise that I am employable and capable of doing the job to the best of my ability. I now have the opportunity to further my experience and skills whilst doing a job I enjoy.

My duties include referencing, updating spread sheets, phoning clients to inform them of upcoming dates for the jobs fair and booking training days. I enjoy obtaining references for FJF employees and feel confident at it. I also confer for FJF employee training days within the team and call up to confirm them. I have also done emailing, printing, scanning and faxing.

I like the people I work with. It’s an efficient environment and everyone is very friendly and helpful. I enjoy the hospitable atmosphere and flexible working hours. It’s the first job I’ve had that I enjoy getting up for in the morning.

I am also doing an NVQ Business Admin to broaden my work skills, specifically within the current job role I am doing. It will also help improve my prospects for a similar career path.

was established in 2006 as an umbrella organisation for the voluntary and community sector working with children, young people and families across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough .In just four years, the charity has grown from six staff to almost 30 and operates out of three offices across the county.

As well helping youngsters directly, Young Lives acts as an umbrella organisation, offering guidance, advice and training to other charities, groups and clubs that work directly with children and young people.

The heart of our mission is to improve the lives of children and young people and families and we have dedicated strands of work that support the organisations that provide services to children and young people.

One of the charity’s most popular projects is the Jam Van, a van kitted out with the latest multi-media technology, including eight Mac computers.
The van is made available to groups and clubs, who can use it to hold mini-workshops, encouraging youngsters to be creative.
Young Lives works with different groups right across Cambridgeshire. It allows young people to get involved in media.
It’s all about bringing creativity to them and making a positive impact.

Young Lives is all about empowering young people and helping them take control of their lives. We give them a voice.
Young Lives is also involved with the Vinvolved project, (which I work on) a national scheme that encourages people aged 16 to 25 to help out in their communities through volunteering enabling them to give back and learn new skills which will later benefit them when jobseeking in this difficult climate. It encourages them to keep active and busy – and integrating into their communities no matter what their backgrounds, although we work with mainstream schools we have priority groups we wish to impact on like the NEETS who are not in employment, education & training!

“My role as Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) Assistant entails me to answer incoming calls from tenants and take messages of anti social behaviour issues they need to discuss with the Neighbourhood manager. Sending letters and emails to tenants regarding various issues. Sorting the post out each day for the ASB team and then putting the letters through the franking machine and other general admin duties.”

Getting a FJF job has provided me with an opportunity to further my experience whilst earning a wage, prior to this I was finding it extremely difficult to find work due to the current economic climate. Being unable to find work was a difficult experience and to be able to given this chance with Future Jobs Fund has uplifted me and built up my confidence at working in the ‘real world’.”

“My main job role involves client cases where there are unfair or discriminatory policies or cases where clients should have been treated differently. I complete evidence forms about the client’s problems and what should be changed about particular policies. I have also been sitting in on client interviews to gain more experience about how Citizens Advice works, and I look out for cases where there is a Social Policy. In addition I have been on some trips with advisers who do outreach work, such as in the prison.”

“I feel I have settled in very well as I’ve been introduced into social policy work gradually which has given me more time to adapt. I am most proud of being able to sit in on an interview and spot a particularly significant social policy of a case of racial discrimination, and completed an evidence form for this which I really enjoyed and found rewarding.

Peterborough Mopeds

“Peterborough Mopeds” is a moped gifting project that assists those seeking work, or those who are in danger of losing their job due to transport issues.

Mopeds are purchased together with related safety equipment, each applicant will be trained to statutory Compulsory Basic Training standard and the moped loan, alongside safety equipment and insurance, will commence once the applicant has a job offer. The applicant’s contributions consist of £40 per week over the 15 week payment period

This project is designed to break the vicious circle of needing private transport to be able to get a job and not being able to afford such transport without a job and has been developed with the full support of end users.

Although this is an entirely new method of operation in Peterborough, it is based on KickStart’s 11 years’ experience of moped loans across the eastern region, and utilises well-established working relationships with agencies dealing with employment, education and training issues.

Peterborough Mopeds are working closely with Peterborough Job Centre Plus and have been provided with a desk to work from within the Job Centre to enable the project to interact directly with clients who may need this scheme to enable them to secure employment

This project funded by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA). EEDA's investment has been made as part of a joint programme of work with Peterborough City Council to help people in Peterborough overcome barriers to employment."

Holly Mahon was unemployed for two months before gaining the opportunity to work for PCC Children’s Services as a Project and Administration Assistant for Phase 2 of the scheme. Holly started her role on 20th September.

“Before gaining this role I had only ever worked in childcare and education. When my last job, as a teaching assistant ended I decided I wanted a new challenge in a different working environment. However, as I had no experience in anything other than childcare, I was continually turned down for jobs. My job centre advisor offered me the opportunity to apply for the Future Jobs Fund and the rest is history! I hope to gain many new experiences that I would possible need for a successful ‘career change’.”

“I felt nervous before starting this role as it was completely different to what I have ever done before. However, I was also excited to finally have the change I felt I needed, a chance to learn something new and meet new people. “

“I am working in Children’s Services, Learning and Skills, helping the Assistant Director and her Personal Assistant with various tasks. Hi my name is Gary Harbisher,

Im just keeping in touch and letting you know how I’m doing since leaving my FJF job. I’ve started my second job at the Saint Johns School, it’s a lot more physically active then my main job. At the same time as starting that I got offered 15 more hours at the Healthy Living Centre working with the respiratory team, so my hours went from 15 to 35 in a week. I will also be working a third job for my step-father-in-law as an engineer, repairing computer parts and assembling custom built computers as a weekend home job, quite looking forward to starting that. So I will be on 45 to 50 hours a week shortly.

My biology course is still going well, although I’ve taken a week break from the gym after my 10 week review was better then expected.

Although the news that I’m most excited about is that I will be getting my own place within the next few weeks, going to see my first apartment on Saturday J

Russell Leigh donated his picture, and will now become a 'big picture' yourself winner, his portrait will be projected onto London’s National Theatre building tonight at 8.05pm and can be watched live at http://www.youtube.com/aviva.

All successfully pictures will contribute to charity, as AVIVA will give £1 to Street to School and Save the Children to help street children in India, up to a grand total of £250,000 will be donated.

Farah has recently started working for the Peterborough Women’s Enterprise Centre as an Administrator Assistant/Event Co-ordinator.

Getting this opportunity means a lot to me, as it has given me a chance to gain experience in an office environment and dealing with clients, which I have never done before.

My job role involves various different duties such as, taking/making phone calls, keeping track of client records on the spreadsheet database, attending events and stock taking.

I hope to be able to build my confidence up. I want to be able to handle clients and customers in the correct way. I also want to be able to gain more skills with the IT side of my role, which will benefit me in the future

I’ve been here for 2 weeks which have been very enjoyable. I was given all the help I needed; I didn’t feel as if I was a new member of staff, but more like a part of the Women’s Enterprise Centre team.

I would DEFINITELY recommend the Future Jobs Fund to other unemployed people. Because of the Future Jobs Fund I was able to get my life back on track. A whole year when I was looking for work and wasn’t getting anywhere was very hard to take, but now I have the chance to gain so much more experience and get some of my confidence back. I think this is a fantastic chance for people who have dreams and aspirations.

I think that the Future Jobs Fund team were extremely helpful, and have given me really good advice, such as retaking my maths GCSE. I was planning to retake it next year at university, but the Future Jobs Fund has given me a brilliant opportunity to retake my maths GCSE.

YOUNG PEOPLE RAFFLE CAR FOR PETERBOROUGH SOUP KITCHEN

Peterborough City Council's 8 to 19 service was awarded Connecting Communities Government funding in January to work with the young people from Peterborough's central ward on the Modify project. The young people have been involved at every stage, from purchasing the black 2002 Citroen Saxo, managing the budget, working with staff from Ice Direct to modify the car, choosing the charity and organising the raffle.

The car, which was bought from Star Cars in Peterborough, and has been fitted with a new stereo system, alarm, exhaust, speakers, window tinting, alloy wheels and lights. All the work has been guaranteed by Ice Direct.

The car will now be raffled with a full MOT certificate, with proceeds going to Peterborough Soup Kitchen. The raffle will be launched at Peterborough Regional College, Park Crescent, Peterborough, on Friday 15 October 2010 at 1.15pm. Tickets will be sold for £2 each to people aged 18 years and over.

People will also be able to enter the raffle when the car is parked outside the former Woolworths store on Bridge Street, Peterborough, on Saturday 23 October 2010 and outside the Town Hall on Bridge Street, Peterborough, on Saturday 30 October 2010 from 9am to 5pm.

The Mayor of Peterborough will draw the winner at the Youth Access Point in Central Library, Broadway, Peterborough, on Friday 17 December 2010 at 2pm.

In recognition of their hard work, the young people involved in the project have achieved a British Safety Council Level 1 health and safety qualification and are working towards a 30-hour Award Scheme Development Accreditation Network (ASDAN) award. Five of the young people have signed up for a course at Peterborough Regional College, another is seeking an apprenticeship with Ice Direct and one young person is working with city council Connexions staff to secure education, training or employment opportunities.

Meet Tracey Covell - Retail Manger

Tracey Covell was unemployed for over 6 months before hearing about the FJF scheme. “When I heard about the project and the jobs they had available, I jumped at the chance to apply for them.”

Tracey was working at Best Deal 4 Baby, for most of the 6 months before finishing here at the FJF team. “I have made a lot of new friends whilst at the FJF. I have also gained an NVQ in Customer Service which has helped me deal with customers in a professional manner.”

“The support I have received from the FJF project team has been amazing and thanks to their help and guidance I have been able to get valuable work experience, an NVQ and confidence in my own abilities to work within this environment.”

After a short secondment away from the Future Jobs Fund project, I have returned to manage the project last week.

The project has moved on in leaps and bounds in the few months I was away. The support which the employee managers are delivering to the employees is brilliant, with loads of different courses and training available.

And the best news of all, is that fifty of out former FJF employees have gone on to get employment! This is brilliant news and proves that this project works.

I am really excited to see how all the individuals on FJF are contributing, and will continue to contribute to make Peterborough a thriving city.

The Future Jobs Fund Go Pink for Breast Cancer

The men and women, who work together at the Future Jobs Fund, dressed in pink in support of Cancer Research UK’s breast cancer awareness campaign, ‘Join the fight for women’s survival.’ As well as dressing up in pink, they sold pink cakes and raffle tickets. The team raised £65 towards the fight for women’s survival.

Cancer Research UK’s campaign ‘Join the fight for women’s survival’ is designed to act as a rallying call, encouraging everyone to help beat breast cancer – a disease which affects more than 45,500 women every year in the UK. As well as raising vital funds for research, Cancer Research UK’s campaign aims to make all women aware of their risk of breast cancer, which affects one-in-nine women in the UK at some stage in their lives.

Lee Wyer who was the event organiser, said: “We wanted to support Cancer Research UK because we all know someone who has been touched by cancer. Stepping forward to ‘Join the fight for women’s survival’ is a great way to help a really important cause and have fun at the same time.”

Cancer Research UK is the largest single funder of breast cancer research in the UK, spending nearly £45 million on groundbreaking work into the disease last year. This research covers all aspects of the disease, from understanding its molecular causes and investigating new ways to prevent and diagnose it, to developing better treatments and improving quality of life for people affected by it.

The Future Jobs Fund Peterborough has been successfully working in partnership with many of its partners during the last year.
One such partnership was evident at the Veranda Centre on Wednesday 15th September 2010. Where Shama Kanwar, Community Development Worker at the NHS held the Bereavement community Project launch event. This included guest speakers from Cruse Bereavement care, Infant Mortality Dept and the Gladstone Children’s Centre.

According to a representative from the CPFT Community Development Team, they are "thrilled with the Future Jobs Fund project, which has given them two young people during phase 1 and another person in phase 2 of the scheme."

"This project has been hugely supported by the work that Nazia and Katy did and will be supported over the next few months by Tawana – our next FJF employee."

Mentoring Week is underway!

The first day of Mentoring Week was a great success and saw employees come into the shop to speak to our mentors about careers involving working with young people, business administration and business management. We also had a number of employees speak to Jane, an Adult Guidance Manager at Next Step. They were able to get personalised careers advice from her.

For the rest of the week the shop will have mentors who specialise in careers within the NHS, working with people with special needs, the building trade, business administration, business management and education. Jane will also be in the shop again on Friday. If you wish to speak to any of these mentors then come along to our shop on Long Causeway!

53 per cent rise in employability of city’s young people

53 per cent of previously long-term unemployed young people have now gone directly into employment following the completion of a Future Jobs Fund role.

The scheme has proved to dramatically improve the employability levels of Peterborough’s 18 – 24 year olds through the provision of 6 months of paid work, enabling them to gather the essential skills and experience needed for the work place.

Richard Cooper was unemployed for a year before being employed through the future jobs fund as part of Peterborough City Council’s care and repair team. Richard has now gone on to work full time for Mears Ltd as a Customer Service Administrator.

Richard said, “With thanks to my future jobs fund placement, I have gained so many new skills. My computer and communication skills have improved so much and I have gained experience working both with customers and as part of a team within an office.”

All Future Jobs Fund positions, including Richard’s, are focused on providing a benefit to the community whilst also increasing the job prospects of the individual. All Future Jobs Fund employees also receive guidance and support in the form of training, workshops and advice services.

Gary Conder, Future Jobs Fund project manager said, “The Future Jobs Fund has provided Peterborough’s young unemployed with some fantastic paid work experience in a range of interesting job roles. The scheme has allowed these young people to learn more about the different types of careers and opportunities which are open to them and also provided them with the essential skills and experience needed when entering the world of work.”

Meet Falaq-Naz Mir - Reception/Office Assistant at the Eco Innovation Centre

The Post Office 1,000 Challenge

Chris Moon, a disabled ultra-distance athlete, will be running an incredible 36 miles a day for 30 days across the UK visiting Post Office branches, Post Office sites and Barnardo's projects to raise money for the Barnardo's Believe in Children Appeal.

The Future Jobs Fund is hosting a WEEK LONG mentoring and job searching week dedicated to you at our FJF shop on Long Causeway in the City Centre.

We will have mentors at our shop who will be able to help and advise you on your future plans, or if you require any specific help with anything within their specialised area.

The week is also intended to help you with your job searching. We will have a wide variety of job vacancies for you to browse through and you can speak to the mentors present or to your Employee Manager for advice on proceeding with the application process.

I’d like to thank the FJF team , for the marvellous opportunity you guys gave me to work here at PECT. Working in a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere is very enjoyable. But the main thing was- Watching people loving what they do and being good at it- this has made me
realise that I needed to reach further and chase my dreams. At PECT I learnt the real meaning of “Loving you job”!
I’ve made life-time friends and in only a few months, I’ve learnt way more than I’ve learnt in 2 years of previous employment. I’m glad that the FJF exists and I can tell by my own experience that it’s a success.

I wish you all the best luck in helping other young people like me finding their path.

Meet Michelle Broadbent - Recycling Project Officer at the PCC

Michelle Broadbent is a Recycling Project Officer at the PCC has recently spent some time with the Catering team at City Services. Over the last few weeks she has been completing general administrative duties. To allow Michelle to get a real flavour for the Catering department they decided to assign her to a four day “Tudor Days” event at Peterborough Cathedral. This event is an educational trip that school children attend.

Here is Michelle’s account of the event; the week was from 5th – 9th July, I assisted the catering team at a Tudor event held at the Cathedral. To be able to do this I had to complete the ‘Basic Food Hygiene Certificate’ which lasts 3 years.

All the days generally went like this:

8am: I got picked up from the office by Lorraine and went to the school kitchen at Dogsthorpe Primary. We counted the food needed and boxed it up; we also counted and cooked the pasties ready to box up. I then washed all the boxes and the baking trays after the pasties had been cooked. Once all the food was cooked and packed we loaded it into the van ready to take to the Cathedral.

11am: I got changed into my wench outfit which consisted of a long black skirt, plain white top with a corset style top on top with poufy sleeves and a mop cap.

11.15am: We left to go to the cathedral and set up the food ready for the children to serve.

12-1.30pm: We filled up the Tudor jugs with juice and half filled all the goblets that are on the table. We then filled up plastic jugs and place them under the table ready for refills. We put bread rolls into baskets for the children to serve to the other children and the abbot. Once the children have got places the Abbot enters the room followed by a procession of lord and ladies (some of the children and dressed as lords and ladies, some as servers and the rest are in normal Tudor dress) After the bread rolls had been served we put the pasties into the baskets ready for the next course, then they had ginger biscuits and an apple each to finish.

1.30pm-2pm: Someone is pulled up for having an English Bible and/or teaching from an English Bible. They are then taken round the corner and “spanked” for punishment, the children look stunned when they hear the screams (its all pretend and to entertain the children of course). Next a play is performed showing the story of St. George; a few of the teachers from the schools take part and some of the children too. Then when we were finished we put the boxes back onto the van ready for the next day.

The whole week was very enjoyable and different. It was good to experience in a kitchen environment and from the catering side of the PCC. On the Friday, when the meal finished, me and Lorraine were called up to see the Abbot, we both thought we were going to be told off for having English Bibles. I was very much surprised and grateful when we were given a beautiful bouquet of flowers each with a butterfly in. I wouldn’t say no to doing this again.

Grainne Kiely - Support Worker at Axiom Housing

Grainne Kiely was unemployed for Six Months before gaining the opportunity as a Support worker at Axiom Housing. She started on13th April 2010.

“Before I started I was so happy that I was going to be able to start work again. To get a chance like this means a lot to me as it will give me the opportunity to gain many new experiences and skills in a job role that I would very much like to do in the future.”

“I help maintain the day-to-day running of the project at Fair View Court and I also ensure the provision of a supportive and structured environment which both encourages and enables residents to live as independently as possible helping them to build confidence and develop as responsible adults. I am also doing a club on a Tuesday evening where I sit with residents and go through different computer courses and help to teach them how to use them.”

“Whilst I have been at Fair View Court I have done a basic maths course and am hoping to do an ITQ qualification in the near future. I am also hoping to do a first aid and health and safety in the workplace course. But I have particularly enjoyed doing the training on safeguarding vulnerable adults.”

“I would like to thank everyone at Axiom for giving me this opportunity and helping me better my skills and qualifications. You have all been so great.”

Luke Wright - Recycling Project Officer at the Peterborough City Council

Congratulations to Luke Wright for successfully gaining full time employment whilst on the Future Jobs Fund scheme. Luke has been employed by an agency who works alongside Amazon.com, and is part of Amazon’s plan to expand across the country, he will be working in the distribution centre in Peterborough.

Luke was working with the waste education team from the 2nd March 2010 and his last day was 9th July. Luke is pictured wearing the composting Claire suit!!

Luke’s line manager Kirsty Martin describes the composting Claire suit as “a fun part of the role that the waste education team undertake, usually the team have to play a part in an assembly at one of the schools or at a road show. Luke has managed to get out of wearing Claire as he is too tall and would frighten the children!! So we got him to wear it before he left!”

The impact he has made has been great, he has been very flexible in adapting to different working hours and conditions, as he has tried various roles within the team. He has completed recycling relays within schools and assemblies, been door knocking to educate the residents of Peterborough on waste and recycling. Been on road shows, completed admin duties and dealt with queries and complaints, he has also been bin loading and litter picking. This is just a few examples of the various roles he has completed within the 4 months time frame. I believe he has learnt a wide range of new skills, experience and confidence with people, which he will be able to adapt to progress further in his employment.

Meet Joshua Conrad and Robert Lee – Park Assistants at Nene Park Trust

Robert Lee was unemployed for 2 years, whilst Joshua Conrad was unemployed for 6 months. Both were successful in gaining the opportunity at Nene Park Trust as Park Assistants. They started work on the 1st March 2010.

Nene Park Trust is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity. It is financially independent and does not receive funding from local or central government or any other public body. All its income is devoted to operating, maintaining and developing Nene Park now and for the future.

The Rangers at Nene Park look after Peterborough’s largest green space comprising 1722 acres. In the summer months this involves grass cutting, hedge cutting, weed control and keeping the site clean and tidy. In the winter months there is a greater emphasis on tree work, thinning out the numerous tree belts and woodland areas as well as repairing and reinstalling fencing and gates. In addition to this the Rangers provide a Duty Ranger service 365 days a year and deliver a public events programme of guided walks and activities. Joshua said, “Our job roles at Nene Park cover a variety of different tasks, most of the tasks we undertake involve the maintenance of Nene Park and Ferry Meadows. Some of the tasks we are responsible for range from mowing the grass or cutting the hedges to painting fences and benches and completing general repairs around the park. We have also been part of the Ranger events for the community with things such as kite making and making environmental sculptures.”

Joshua has, “Enjoyed the opportunity to work outside everyday, being able to work in and around some of the beautiful lakes and scenery at Ferry Meadows has been a great experience. Whereas Robert has, “Really enjoyed being able to gain so many new and great skills, which I hope will help me in my search for a full time job.”

Robert and Joshua both agreed that, “Everyone we work with are great, they have all been so helpful and are always giving us advice, but still make each day fun and a joy to be at work.”

Deborah Rowell - Document Producer at Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service

Deborah Rowell was unemployed for Over 6 months before gaining the opportunity to be a Document Producer at Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue Service. She started on 24th of May 2010.

“Getting this opportunity means I that I will gain transferrable skills that I can refer to in the future and that will give me the experience needed to further a career in administration of a similar office position.”

“My role as a Document Producer involves writing up new Standard Operating Procedures for CFRS.I also helped to cover reception when two of the receptionists were on leave. Tasks I have also done include: using the tannoy system, answering the phones, transferring calls, I’ve used the databases, excel spreadsheets, word documents, and the email system.”

“While on my placement I think I’ve proved to myself that I can work well when given a range of responsibilities. I’m really proud of the work I have done so far. Meet Chris Brierley – Assistant Project Officer at BTCV

Chris Brierley was unemployed for over 6 months before successfully gaining the opportunity to be an Assistant Project Officer at BTCV. He started on the 26 April 2010.

BTCV (formerly British Trust for Conservation Volunteers) began as a body organising practical conservation tasks in the countryside. However their role has changed considerably since the foundation of the organisation. Although they have always been involving people in the environment in one way or another, in what the BTCV describes as a 'hands-on' approach, BTCV are now very much involved in community work in urban areas, such as Parnwell which is one of the locations Chris has been working at.

“Before I started this role I was really looking forward to being able to get back into work. I think it was more exciting as I gained the opportunity to work in career I believed I could learn so much from and possibly forge a career path in.”

“Since I have been here I have enjoyed the work I’ve done. I have been given so much training and advice. For example, we have been shown how to tell if a tree is dead or alive, and methods to either preserve or remove the tree. This is great as without that kind of advice I would never gain the right skills needed to progress further.”

“I have really enjoyed working in Parnwell as we have recently been involved in clearing a big section of woodland shrubbery, including trees and bushes. I enjoyed this as we did it as a team and all had to work towards the same goals, which was a new but enjoyable experience. I have always enjoyed working in all weathers, as you can still do all so much to help the environment.”

“Everyone at BTCV has been great and have all been very fun people to work with, who are always keen to help.”

Meet Robert Gallagher - Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) – Project Support

There’s nothing worse for young people than to be unemployed and broke. Before working for the green charity PECT I faced the task of signing on at the Job Centre every fortnight, reading the back pages of local newspapers and applying to agencies to find a job without the faintest hope of success. I believed I was going to be unemployed for a while, until I was made aware of the Future Jobs Fund (FJF), a scheme set in place to find work for those unemployed and claiming JSA. I applied for three jobs through the FJF, but didn’t believe I’d get a response. My personal advisor at the Job Centre seemed confident that I would soon be employed, which was very pleasing as I was unemployed for so long. Within three weeks I had two interviews, followed by two offers of employment. I was over the moon! I’ve worked for PECT on a varied list of projects including web administration and attending community events.

Since then I’ve done a bit of research and it turns out stories like mine are not uncommon. Projects like this scheme have helped make a big difference to people like myself who have struggled to get back into employment. The most commendable aspects of the FJF scheme is its drive towards helping people progress further towards the goal of successful full-time employment. The majority of their jobs are in the community sector and within the environmental sector, such as my job here at PECT and the highly successful Green Team who have travelled the city knocking on doors reminding people that Peterborough is the UK’s Environment Capital, imparting advice on how to reduce energy consumption and many other tips on sustainability.

My role at PECT has kept me busy with a variety of roles so far in my placement. I am currently responsible for maintaining the Greeniversity website, which allows anyone to share important green skills and engage in events throughout Peterborough. My other role is to monitor exchanges on the Eastex website, which allows businesses throughout the UK to keep landfills to a minimum and helps people to exchange goods from furniture to garden waste.

Luke Tansley – Neighbourhood Support Officer – Cambridgeshire Constabulary

Luke Tansley was unemployed for 7 months before taking the opportunity to get back into work at Cambridgeshire Constabulary as a Neighbourhood Support Officer. Luke started on 22nd March.

To update the police databases, compose spreadsheets, letters and emails. Link relevant departments, individuals and groups within neighbourhood teams using a joined up approach, to reduce anti-social behaviour, crime and the fear of crime and to improve the quality of life for residents and of the environment within our neighbourhoods.”

“Since I have been here I have enjoyed organising the first ever open day in Werrington police station so that the officers could engage with the community, which had a great turn out and was a success. By doing tasks such as this I hope to gain a good understanding of life in the police force and see what it takes to gain a permanent position here.”

“The people who I work with in the Werrington police station, are brilliant and have helped me progress so much already and are always willing to give me advice and assistance in any way they could, so a big thanks to the team.”

Katie Hagon – Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Project Worker - CAMEO (NHS)

Katie was unemployed for 6 months before being offered the role of BME Project Worker at CAMEO. Katie started on the 5th March.

CAMEO is a NHS clinical service providing expert specialised care and support to people aged 17-35 experiencing a first episode of psychosis. They offer focused interventions for a 3 year period supporting people to take control of their lives helping them to be equipped with the tools to manage their mental health and optimism to get on and enjoy life.

“My Role as a BME Project Worker is to help customers with completing forms, phoning them to speak and give advice, I also work on projects with CAMEO which help people with mental health issues, this has been very rewarding and I have loved being apart of something that is helping people.”

“This job has given me the chance to get back into work, gain valuable work experience and be apart of something that really helps people. I have been very lucky to get a chance like this and have enjoyed every minute so far, and fully looking forward to the remainder of my placement.”

“My work colleagues are absolutely amazing; I could not have asked for a better team of people to work with, they have simply made it a joy to work here.”

Meet Robyn Churchill – HR Assistant at Peterborough & Stamford Hospitals

1. It means a lot to me as I get the chance to work for 6 months, and gain so many valuable work experiences needed to progress further.
2. I would say that the work experience provided by this scheme is of a great benefit to the unemployed as it is one of the main reasons people can’t find work, so the scheme will benefit you a lot.

Meet Lee Wyer- Future Jobs Fund General Project Assistant

Lee Wyer was unemployed for 6 months before being introduced to the Future Jobs Fund Scheme and gaining the role of General Project Assistant. His new role started on 21st December 2009.

“The FJF role gives me the chance to gain the required work experience and knowledge to advance in my new career path, as well as giving me a chance to provide for my young family. I am excited to be given a chance to prove I can do something to help others get back into work. Being part of such a great project that is making a real difference to the young unemployed in Peterborough is something I am glad to be a part of.”

“My job role as a General Project Assistant is to support the project team of the FJF. I liaise with the host partners and employees and maintain the FJF Blog, Facebook and Twitter to promote the FJF Project.”

“In the first two weeks at work I was put straight into action and I found this slightly manic, however I found it helped me settle in much easier as I didn’t have time to feel nervous at all! I find my job role very interesting because I am able to meet the new FJF employees and write blogs on them. It has been very rewarding to see how happy the employees are to finally get a chance to get back into work.”

Danielle Wagner- Administration Support Future Jobs Fund

Danielle Wagner was unemployed for just under a year before successfully gained the opportunity to work with the Future Jobs Fund team as Administration Support. She started on 22nd February 2010.

“After being out of work for almost a year the Future Jobs Fund scheme has given me a great opportunity in gaining the appropriate training and understanding about what is required for me to follow my career path into Administration. Before I started working with the Future Jobs Fund team I was struggling to find the right job for me and now I believe that Administration is the right way to go.”

“As Administration Support I have a variety of roles I am in charge of photocopying and scanning the new applications on arrival, updating the Future Jobs Fund and Equal Opportunities Databases, and filing the applications away. I also assist with other office based duties such as calling up for character references.”

“The first two weeks for me were interesting I learnt quite a lot about people’s roles and my knowledge of the Future Jobs Fund scheme was improved. I was in charge of filing for the first couple of weeks, ensuring the applications were saved on the computer and put onto the database. I found it easy to settle in as everybody was helpful and friendly and I was glad to be getting back into work.”

“The most interesting thing I have done so far would have to be updating the database, inputting information onto both the FJF and Equal Opportunities Databases. I found this very demanding as I had to ensure the correct information was entered on to the databases. I also enjoy calling up for references it has helped me gain more confidence when speaking on the phone in a work related manner.”

“Everybody on the Future Jobs Fund team is great. They have helped me settle in and have advised me in areas that I struggle in. They are a friendly bunch of people and I could not have asked for a better team to work alongside.”

If you could recommend this scheme to other unemployed people, what would you say to them?

“I would say that the Future Jobs Fund Scheme is the best way to get back into work and as long as you are eligible you should sign up now, the sooner the better! The scheme enables you to get the correct training and experience that would be asked of you with the career choice you have chosen.”

Meet Sian Lomax – Informatics Assistant at NHS Informatics

Sian Lomax was unemployed for 18 months before gaining the Informatics Assistant role at NHS Informatics. She started on 22nd February.

“Getting this opportunity was a great way for me to gain more work experience and learn another line of work. I was feeling very excited to be starting a new challenge and was very eager to get started as soon as I could.”

“My job role as an Informatics Assistant is to input data and log public comments on a database to analyse and create reports from. I am currently working with my line manager to create a scorecard for GP practices, this will involve a lot of work with Microsoft Excel which is a program I enjoy using.”

Another 238 jobs for the Future Jobs Fund in Peterborough!!!

The government has announced a further £1.5 million investment in jobs for young people in Peterborough. This is Peterborough’s second successful bid to the Future Jobs and creates a further 238 jobs for unemployed young people in the city. The announcement comes after the first 167 jobs from the Future Jobs Fund Peterborough were successfully filled by April.

The first of the new jobs are being advertised from June with Job Centre Plus and in the Future Jobs Fund shop on Long Causeway in the City centre. The majority of the jobs are for young people aged 18-24 who have been unemployed for more than 26 weeks. In addition, 39 of the jobs are specifically for unemployed people aged 25 and over living in the 10 areas of Peterborough with the highest rates of unemployment. The 238 jobs are being provided by 35 partners, from across public, voluntary and private sector organisations in Peterborough.

Meet Sean Dunthorne – Heritage Assistant at Peterborough Museum

Sean Dunthorne was unemployed for just over 6 months before starting work on 25th February at Peterborough’s Museum as a Heritage Assistant.

Peterborough museum is a perfect example of the city’s heritage and was first opened as a museum in 1931. It was then updated in 1939 with the welcome addition of the art gallery. Over the years it has held many fun and enjoyable events for families such as the half term Dinosaur Week and Christmas events, which even included live reindeers last year! It is also said that the museum is the most haunted building in the city appearing on the popular TV show Most Haunted and hosting regular ghost walks.

“My role as a Heritage Assistant involves me as part of a team building and designing the exhibits. I also help with the maintenance of the exhibits.”

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here as I’ve been able to put my building and design skills to great use. I feel like the people here trust me enough to let me use my imagination and put my ideas forward.”

“The people I work with at the museum are great. They’re all simply amazing and have given me all the confidence to be myself and work in a way that best suits my personality.”

Craig Hewitt - General Assistant - INNOVA

INNOVA is a company limited by guarantee and is a registered charity. Its community owned and works within Peterborough’s deprived communities. Its key area of activity at this present time is the John Mansfield Centre, which is a community hub offering residents a route back into education, employment or training. In addition it provides an easy access to a range of services such as the Police, Cross Keys homes, Connexions, performing and visual arts activities and quality hireable space for community groups.

“Getting this opportunity means everything to me, as it has given me the chance to gain valuable work experience and get paid for something I am particularly interested in doing as a career.”

“Since I’ve been here I’ve been doing general administration duties, preparing and completing minutes at board meetings. I’ve also been involved in working on local projects such as the John Mansfield Centre. The task I have enjoyed most since being here has been visiting the Bromley by bow centre and writing up an information booklet for their project.”

“My first couple of weeks at work I was very nervous, but after being given a wide range of activities and tasks to do I settled in easily and now feel very comfortable in my working environment. With the help of my work colleagues and the Future Jobs Fund team I now feel much more confident in my ability to find a permanent job in the future.”

Alex Amoss – Care Support Worker – Peterborough Council Voluntary Services

Alex Amoss was unemployed for just over 1 year before being given the opportunity to get back into work as a Care Support Worker with Peterborough Council Voluntary Services (PCVS). He started on 15th February.

“My role involves me helping out carers with things like filling in forms for finding funding for day trips and projects. As part of this I am required to do general admin duties, go to meetings about how carers need help and what carer’s views or problems are.”

“Since I’ve been here I’ve very much enjoyed the home visits as you get to meet some real characters and so many great people. Being part of the home visit team is great and you get to see people and how happy they are with the help you are giving.”

Christopher Price – Café Assistant – Best Deal 4 Baby

Christopher Price was unemployed for 2 years and 6 months before he was given the opportunity to get back into work at Best Deal 4 Baby as a Café Assistant. Christopher started on Monday 22nd March.

Christopher is working within the Best Deal 4 Baby café. He is serving customers by making tea or coffee and food. He also works in the Best Deal 4 Baby clothes exchange store, which involves him helping customers find what they are looking for, cash handling and general shop duties, such as stock rotation and stock ordering.

“Since I’ve been here I’ve really enjoyed meeting so many great and interesting people on a daily basis and believe this has helped me gain more self-belief”

I believe I owe this scheme so much already as without them I don’t think I could have got back into work so quickly.”

Max Melton-Database Compiler -Peterborough Council for Voluntary Services

Max Melton was unemployed for twelve months before getting the opportunity to get back to work as a Database Compiler at Peterborough Council for Voluntary Services (PCVS), He started on February 15th.

As Database Compiler, Max is responsible for maintaining and updating the various databases at PCVS, as well as maintaining the hardcopy filing systems. As well as this, his job has allowed him to work with the various projects that PCVS provides, including the Volunteers Centre and Carers Centre. He also helps out on reception, contributes to events, and assists the day-to-day running of the building.

“Since I’ve been here I have been interested in, and challenged by my daily workload; it is very varied, so I don’t spend all day looking at databases. Sometimes I’m downstairs on reception, or about the building helping the Centre Administrator with health and safety tasks. I‘ve also been able to use my artistic talents in leaflet, flier, and poster designs, and this has been rewarded and encouraged by my peers and superiors. I’ve helped out and attended several PCVS events, such as the Small Groups Forum and lent my hand to our Small Groups Worker. Attending these events, and simply interacting with a wealth of people from all areas of Peterborough society on a daily basis, has helped make me feel aprt of within the organisation.

“The main thing I feel I’ve achieved through this job is helping boost my work ethic and pro-activity. Being out of work for so long has inevitably hindered my ability to work within a 9-5 routine, and getting this job, part-time though it may be, has helped immeasurably with my ability to stick to routine. The fact that my workplace isn’t a place I dread going to also helps.

“The team I work with are all excellent, the environment is laid back and friendly. Everyone here, including the management, are not only professional but compassionate too. It was easy for me to settle in immediately and I became well acquainted with all the employees in no time. From the moment I stepped through the door for my interview I felt that PCVS was somewhere where I could very happily work. I was greeted warmly and offered a cup of tea, met promptly by the Centre Administrator, and then treated to an interesting and enjoyable interview with both the Centre Administrator and Assistant General Secretary.

“The Future Jobs Fund may have some flaws. However, as an initiative to get young people back into work – especially those with very few qualifications or relevant experience – for that it has its success stories. For me, certainly, it has proven positive. For anyone who meets the criteria I’d say that it is worth investing the time in applying. I look forward to seeing what happens once my six month contract is finished.

Aaron Cooke – Funding Co-ordinator – Best Deal 4 Baby

As Funding Co-ordinator Aaron is responsible for working with the local community, helping to run local projects and getting them funded. Aaron will alongside Abid Hussain working with organisations such as Tesco, Barclays and the National Lottery to gain funding so that the community projects at Best Deal 4 Baby can continue to run and be of a great benefit to the local community.

Aaron Says: “I’ve been involved in many great tasks and projects, and I especially enjoyed being able to go to PCVS for a Children in Need presentation, which was an very educational experience as it is something I’ve never done before”

“In the last month I’ve applied to Genesis Community for £2000 to help the unemployed people in Peterborough by offering them training, support and experience. I’ve also been involved in contacting the National Lottery to try to gain a donation to help pay for a new hub, computers and rooms”

“The people who I work with are brilliant! Truly inspirational characters that have proved you can achieve anything with a little determination and self belief.”

When asked about the Future Jobs Fund scheme and the team, Aaron had this to say; “I love the Future Jobs Fund. If it wasn’t for the Future Jobs Fund I would still be unemployed. I would highly recommend the Future Jobs Fund to anyone who is unemployed.”

Steven Jefferson – Office Junior – Best Deal 4 Baby

Steven Jefferson was unemployed for just over 3 years before he was given the opportunity to get back into work at Best Deal 4 Baby as an Office Junior. Steven started on Monday 22nd March.

As an Office Junior Steven is responsible for answering the telephone at Best Deal 4 Baby, sending emails to charities and companies and general admin duties. “Getting this post means a lot to me because I have been unemployed for so long and was beginning to lose hope on getting a job. But now I have been given a chance to gain work-based skills and valuable work experience”

“Since I have been here, I’ve found that my role has developed to more of an events co-ordinator. I have found that the management here are always keen to help people progress and have trusted me with more responsibility which I am really enjoying.”

“In the last few weeks I’ve made an information sheet for young dads, teenage girls and young parents, which helps to identify what help or advice they might need. As part of this I have designed a teen network survey to provide information, advice they need and what views they have. By getting this information I hope to develop some kind of help workshop to get them involved in.”

“My employers are kind and very understanding. They have been very supportive to me and helped me when I needed it the most. It is like one big family here and I am glad to be a part of it.”

When asked about the Future Jobs Fund scheme and the team, Steven had this to say; “I found the Future Jobs Fund team to be so helpful and have always made themselves available with things such as pay and working issues. I believe this project has been such a major boost in helping young people back into work and back on their feet. I hope that they can continue to help people like me getting back in-to work.”

Dedicated Green Team working in the Orton areas to help people save money and the environment...

Thanks to Peterborough’s Future Jobs Fund a team has been established to help Peterborough achieve its aspiration of becoming the UK’s Environment Capital.

The team of ten visits local people and provides help and advice on how to live in an environmentally friendly way. The team started working in the Ortons in April and will cover three wards in total before the project ends in September.

The project is being managed by green charity Peterborough Environment City Trust (PECT) working with Greater Peterborough Partnership. It is hoped that as well as giving people hints and tips on being green, the team will raise the profile of local environmental initiatives and collect data to help establish what kinds of things local people are already doing to reduce their environmental impact.

Team members conduct a short survey with all the residents they visit asking a range of questions including: Did you know that Peterborough is now working towards becoming the UK’s Environment Capital? How do you actively try to save water in your home? Do you think it is important for each of us as individuals to work towards living greener lives?

Sophie Antonelli from PECT, who is heading up the team, believes the project will greatly benefit the young people involved as well as the people receiving visits from the Green Team. She said: “The project is going really well and we’ve already spoken to over 250 residents. People we’ve visited have been extremely positive about the project and receptive to our suggestions to reduce their environmental impact and save money.

“I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how many people are aware that Peterborough is aiming to become the UK’s Environment Capital and believe it will be beneficial for the city and those living in it.”

Abid Hussain – Funding Co-ordinator – Best Deal 4 Baby

“The people who I work with are more like family members then work colleagues. Everyone is always so helpful and always available to help each other. They have all made me feel very welcome and part of a great team that is doing so much to help within the local communities.”

Jody Watts was unemployed for 10 months before he was offered the post of Careers Assistant within the Future Jobs Fund team; he started the post of the 22nd February 2010. Before Jody was unemployed he used to work as Business Development Coordinator at Learning Works (East Anglia) Ltd Learndirect Centre in Wisbech which is the former Sencia Ltd centres but under new management.

As a Careers Assistant Jody will be responsible for assisting advisors at the Job Centre with helping candidates choose jobs and fill in applications and to provide guidance and support. “I am really excited about starting my new job and being able to be a part of the team that is helping people back into work. I am also looking forward to gaining new skills and experiences that will hopefully help me progress in a job field that suits me best.”

“Since I have started I particularly enjoyed being given the responsibility of redesigning the spreadsheet we use. I have also really enjoyed telephoning clients to offer them a position, having been successful with their interviews. When you get to hear first hand how happy they are at getting back into work, its makes you feel like your apart of something amazing.”

When we asked Jody about how he has found his time within the team so far this is what he had to say “I am really enjoying the job so far, and have gained many new skills already and find myself learning all the time which has been something I have really loved being apart of a team that is helping people gain work experience.”

“The team I work with is great, everyone is so down to earth but still very professional in what they do, the whole team has great sense of humour and are all very friendly and helpful, which helped me to settle in quickly.”

Shelley Gray – Library Assistant – PCC Library

Shelley Gray was unemployed for 13 months before getting the opportunity to get back into work as a Library Assistant at the Peterborough City Council Broadway Library on the 01-03-10.

As a Library Assistant Shelley’s roles will involve her to stock take, work on customer services desk, work with cash management and general admin duties within the Library. “Getting this opportunity from the Future Jobs Fund will help me broaden my skills and give me the chance to gain many new experiences which will help me back into sustainable employment.”

“Since I have been here I have settled in really well and I have enjoyed working with all the different types of people from a variety of backgrounds. I would love to still be here after my six month placement has finished.”

Since Shelley has been at the Library she has “Enjoyed all the jobs have I been assigned, but I have particularly enjoyed working with children’s events as they have given me new experiences, that I have appreciated being a part of.”
“I have also been apart of the team that has worked on trying to promote the Library and the services that we provide, which I loved being apart of, as this has given me a whole new view of the services that are available.”

“Gurjit Kaur is my line manager who has helped me get into a routine of the how the library works and how to get the best results from my work, and I owe a lot to Gurjit already. I would like to add that all the Library staff has been very welcoming and friendly, which has helped me settle very quickly into their team.”

When asked about the Future Jobs Fund scheme. Shelley had this to say “The Future Jobs Fund is an amazing innovative project that I think will benefit the future employment economy. Tim Martin - Head of PR and Communications at Opportunity Peterborough

Tim Martin is Head of PR and Communications at Opportunity Peterborough (OP) the organisation that is working to promote the city and deliver sustainable economic development across Peterborough. OP has so far recruited two members to the team from the Future Jobs Fund.

The scheme has been of great benefit to OP providing talented new staff to the organisation. The new recruits have certainly been thrown in at the deep end as they are already working on and delivering projects for the organisation and the city. The scheme not only allows exposure to “real world” projects but is also helping provide them with new and invaluable skills that can be used in their future careers.

In the short time that we have had staff from the FJF they have worked on writing case studies, press releases, assisted with writing copy for the website and working on some of the contracts that OP are currently managing. I would have no hesitation in recommending that young people find out about the scheme and the opportunities that it has to offer.

Nadine Tatlow – Churches together – Events & Volunteer Co-ordinator

Nadine Tatlow was unemployed for 7 months before getting back into work as an Events & Volunteer Co-ordinator for Churches together through the Future Jobs Fund.

As an Events & Volunteer Co-ordinator Nadine will be organising events, co-ordinating volunteers at events and workshops, undertaking general administrative duties and offering advice at the new Future Jobs Fund shop. Nadine ‘’cannot wait to be involved in this great project. It’s so exciting and impressive and I am just so thrilled to be a part of it all.’’

Since starting Nadine has enjoyed taking part in many tasks and events, such as the Sports Relief Day that the Future Jobs Fund team all took part in. “Hoola-hooping for Sports Relief was great fun. I really enjoyed the day as everybody made me feel like part of a team that is helping people in so many ways.’’ She also enjoyed ‘‘my meeting with Sue from the GPP. It was really good to participate in my first meeting I had attended on my own. I found myself learning so much from the experience which was great.’’

When we asked Nadine how she has found her time on the Future Jobs Fund scheme so far she said ‘’Exciting. It’s such a great project to be a part of. Since I've been here everyone has been so friendly and welcoming, it has made me feel like I’ve been here for years, the team make me feel like the sky is the limit and its always such a joy to come into work.’’

‘’The people I work with have been great. It is supervision with no limits. Everyone and everything in the project is so positive and driven that anything seems possible.’’

When asked about how the role will help her in the future Nadine remarked “the Future Jobs Fund is absolutely fantastic. I was beginning to think I would never get back into work again, let alone get a great opportunity like I have now. They are simply excellent and I would highly recommend them to anyone unemployed and on Job Seekers.’’

Chloe Harris - Peterborough Women’s Enterprise Centre - Administrator Assistant/Event co-ordinator.

I was unemployed for 5 months before getting the position of Administrator Assistant/Event co-ordinator at the Peterborough Women’s Enterprise Centre.
I heard about the Future Job Fund through a friend who attended the job centre and saw it advertised.

I’m now on my fourth week in my new job role and am thoroughly enjoying it.
I’ve was out work for 5 months before hearing about this scheme. It’s been nice to get back into working in a job that suits me.

My job role involves various different duties such as helping organise events we run, promoting the business on the street, taking/making phone calls, keeping track of client records on the spreadsheet database, running the website and stock taking.

The most interesting thing I’ve done so far was on my first week when we had our Launch party. I really enjoyed getting involved in all the preparation for it and helping run it as well. It was a great experience as over 100 city dignitaries attended and was supported by big press coverage.

I’ve been here for 4 weeks and have been assisting with the event co-ordinating and administration. Georgette Rouncefield, the Head of Peterborough women’s enterprise centre has given me a range of exciting projects to work on, such as helping out a lot during our launch party, playing a big part in our clothes exchange room. I’ve also done some of the courses we run in the centre such as body language and building confidence which I think will give me a greater depth of experience to add to my CV and its been hugely beneficial for me getting back into full time work and has given me chances to do relevant courses to further my knowledge in my career.

The people I work with are all kind, lovely people who I get on well with. All of them have been a great help since I’ve been here and made me feel like part of the team.

The Future Jobs Fund team are all very friendly and helpful people. They’ve been there to offer me useful advice and guidance into finding this job which I’m very happy with. Even now they keep in touch with me and assist with any queries or concerns I have. I don’t think people are aware of how much support in finding a job through the Future Job Fund there is. I would encourage anybody out of work to get in touch with The Future Job Fund to find out more.

Meet Glen Curoopen from the Job Centre Plus

Glen Curoopen is a customer services advisor at the Jobcentre; Glen works closely with the people who are eligible for the Future Jobs Fund scheme. Part of his role is to help the customers with selecting from the Future Jobs Fund posts and advising customers with filling in applications.

‘’I have found the Future Jobs Fund scheme to be of a valuable service for me and the personal advisors as we now have something different to offer the customers between 18-24 years of age’’

‘’The Future Jobs Fund has the ability to offer jobs which gives valuable experience to customers. This in turn, can enhance a customer’s career goal or even offer our customers the opportunity of a change of career. This will help them gain new skills that are needed to progress further into gaining permanent employment’’

‘’the Future job fund is great educational experience for the customers as he/she will learn about themselves, gain many skills and get six months paid work experience. They will also be able to gain the confidence that they might not have had due to constant rejection when applying for jobs, so hopefully this project will give them the platform to get back into full time employment’’

‘’From my experience when a customer does gain a job interview via this project and they let me know, I see a difference in a customer’s altitude as they become more positive about applying for other jobs etc as they begin to believe there is some hope, the majority that do manage to get a Future Jobs Fund job are all extremely happy to be given an opportunity to work and learn. We have also had some ex-offenders apply for vacancies under the Future Job Fund scheme and they are surprised but grateful of being offer jobs as they is a mistaken belief that because of a criminal record, they will not ever gain employment or even get back into employment.

Meet Jane Cameron from the Job Centre Plus

Jane Cameron is the Advisory Services Manager at the Jobcentre plus. As part of Jane’s role she works closely with the unemployed who are 16-24 years old.

Here comes the FJF 'Green Team'

Peterborough’s new ‘Green Team’ came together for the first time today to begin their week of induction training, before they hit Peterborough streets to talk to residents about living a more environmentally friendly life. In their new roles, the team of ten will be discussing a number of environmental issues with residents including: recycling, public transport, energy efficiency in the home and what can be done to make everyday life greener.

At today’s induction the Green Team were told more about their new roles within the Environment Capital Communications project and the training that they are set to receive. The Green Team also discussed the survey questions which they will be posing to home owners and residents as they spread the green message through Peterborough’s streets. The Green Team were given lots of information on environmental issues, with Jenna Hiley from Peterborough City Council speaking about climate change.

Nick Goodman, Acting GPP Partnership Manager, spoke to the Green Team about Peterborough bid to become the UK’s Environment Capital. Nick said,

“It was great to see the team all together for the first time, I know this is
going to be a really exciting project not only for the team but for the
residents that they will be talking to. This all helps Peterborough’s aspiration
to Create the UK’s Environment Capital!”

Rowena Mbanu - PR and Communications Assistant- Opportunity Peterborough

I started work as a PR and Communications Assistant for Opportunity Peterborough on the 22nd February and prior to this, I had been out of full time employment for 6 months. The Future Jobs Fund opportunity was a fantastic opportunity for me, as it’s allowed me to pursue the career path I’ve been working towards.

I studied English & History at university and then trained as a journalist and I was hoping to get press office or journalism work, but the media industry is extremely competitive and this was made far worse by the recession. I did think I was going to have to resort to doing long stints of unpaid work experience again but luckily I gained this position through FJF.

I’ve been here for over 5 weeks and have been assisting with the marketing and press coverage of Opportunity Peterborough. Tim Martin, the Head of PR & Communications has given me lots of exciting projects to work on, such as covering the landscape lecture series and writing articles on companies who have received support from OP, which I think will give me a greater depth of experience to add to my CV.

The Opportunity Peterborough team are really friendly and have made me feel very welcome. I know that if I need any kind of help, there’s someone there to lend a hand.

Taking that first step into the media industry can be incredibly difficult and can often be down to whom you know, but FJF opened up a great opportunity for me that I was beginning to feel would be impossible to get. I’m happy that I’m able to put my degree and training to good use.

Russell Leigh - Project Support - Future Jobs Fund

Russell Leigh had been unemployed for 8 months before beginning work as Project Support for the Future Jobs Fund team. Whilst being unemployed Russell took part in Key Theatre stage productions such as Oliver and West Side Story. He was also studying performing arts at Peterborough Regional College. Russell started his new post on the 26th of January 2010.

Since I started on the scheme my role has evolved to meet the needs of the Future Jobs Fund team. When I first started I was appointed as an Admin Assistant which involved completing basic admin duties such as filing and letter writing. However as the project grew my role changed to Project Support, this included similar duties but gave me more responsibility within the team. I am now responsible for liaising with host companies and arranging start dates for the Future Jobs Fund employees.

Some of my duties in this role include liaising with the host companies which are currently in partnership with the Future Jobs Fund. It is my duty to confirm the number of job posts they require and collate suitable applications. I am then responsible for making the host employer aware of these applications and keeping in contact with them to achieve a successful candidate. Once this stage is reached, I speak with the host companies to arrange interview dates and possible start dates. The other side of my job involves administrative duties such as data input, filing, and helping successful candidates with form filling. Lately I’ve been given the responsibility of managing the Occupational Health checks and the Risk Assessments.

Thanks to the Future Jobs Fund I have been given the platform to gain work and experience to hgelp me back into sustainable employment, it has allowed me to truly enjoy every aspect my chosen career path. As a result I’ve developed my skills within the job, all thanks to the Future Jobs Fund scheme.

All the team I work with have been great since I’ve been here and have made it a pleasure to work with them. My line manager, Caroline Rowan is always so helpful. I enjoy the fact that she converses on a mature and socially relatable level.

Aside from the project being extremely beneficial for me getting back into work, it has also given me the chance to pursue the relevant courses and training I need to help me further my knowledge and experience. I would recommend that if you are eligible for this scheme to find out more as it can offer you so much help in getting back to work and giving you the experience and training you will need for long term employment.

Najiah Be - Customer Care Officer - Mears

Najiah Be was out of work for just under 2 years before being offered the post of Customer Care Officer at Mears through the Future Jobs Fund scheme. Najiah began her new role on the Monday 22nd February 2010.

Mears is a housing maintenance provider who works in partnership with Cross Keys Homes, a housing association in Peterborough. Mears’ work involves carrying out repairs and improvements both inside and outside tenants’ homes. The Customer Care team at Mears are in place to ensure that tenants’ needs are met throughout every area of Mears’ work. Najiah’s role at Mears is to work closely with the Customer Care Team, which involves showing prospective tenants around the current Cross Keys homes available to bid for on their housing scheme. She is also responsible for uploading letters on the Mears computer system, ringing tenants for information and has also helped with analysing the customer satisfaction forms.

Since Najiah started the post she has enjoyed ‘’going out the with Customer Care team to do a viewing with some perspective tenants and seeing how it works and what needs to be done to make sure that they get the best possible experience when viewing the property.’’ She has been, ‘’working with Maggie in helping the other Future Jobs Fund employees at Mears complete their timesheets’’.

‘’Since I’ve been here I have been made to feel very welcome and everyone has been so friendly which has helped me to settle in, this has helped my confidence grow and has made me feel like a valuable member of their team’’.

‘’The people I work with have been great, especially Maggie, who makes me laugh as she is a very friendly and kind person who makes work fun and enjoyable’’.

When asked about the Future Jobs Fund scheme she had this to say ‘’getting a job through the Future Jobs Fund has enabled me to gain valuable experience in a position I would like to pursue more in the future, so thanks to the Future Jobs Fund I have been given this opportunity to progress and learn’’.

Frederick Chant - Carpenters Assistant at Mears

Frederick Chant was unemployed for 14 months before he was given the opportunity to work as carpenters assistant at Mears as part of the Future Jobs Fund scheme. Frederick began his role on the Monday 22nd February 2010.

Mears is a housing maintenance provider working in partnership with Cross Keys Homes, a housing association in Peterborough. Mears’ work involves carrying out repairs and improvements both inside and outside of tenants’ homes. As a carpenter assistant Frederick roles will involve him working alongside a number of carpenters at Mears, helping them with the work that they undertake within tenants’ houses. As part of Frederick’s role he will work within the Mears training workshop with other carpenters to help him develop his skills and knowledge further. Some of the work Frederick will be doing includes; repairing doors and windows in tenants’ homes, and repairing or replacing fencing.

Since Frederick started at Mears in February he has been involved in, ‘’replacing a 36ft long fence in a tenant’s garden, which had been damaged.” He has also been replacing doors and windows in an elderly couple’s house’ which he really enjoyed as, “the couple were very pleased because before they were unable to open the door without a struggle”. He has also, ‘’loved being in the training academy and being taught how to lay bricks with the other Future Jobs Fund employees at Mears. He enjoyed this as it ‘was good meeting the other Future Jobs Fund employees who had been given a chance like I was’’.

When we asked Fred how he had found his time at Mears on the Future Jobs Fund scheme so far he said, “It’s great. I’m back to work in a job that I love and that suits me and which I enjoy everyday. I am very happy with the job I was given through the Future Jobs Fund. I am glad to be out and about at work as I get to meet so many nice and friendly tenants, whilst also being able to do a job that I really enjoy.’’

When speaking about his placement company Mears he said, ‘’Working at Mears is very enjoyable and I am always being made to feel very welcome. I feel very comfortable in my working environment, they make me feel like part of the team.’’

When I asked Frederick about the Future Jobs Fund he said, ‘’anyone looking to get back into work should find out about the Future Jobs Fund. I don’t think I would have got a job like this if it wasn’t for the Future Jobs Fund team and the fantastic opportunities they have available, so I would highly recommend them.’’

The Future Jobs Fund Team Does Sports Relief

Friday 19th March was sports relief and the Future Jobs Fund managed to raise a massive £224.35.

The total has been doubled thanks to Anthony Davis from Head stuff and the Future Jobs Fund, when he donated an extra £200, we are all very grateful for your kind and generous donation which takes the total donated a whopping £424.35 to Sports Relief.

The Future Jobs Fund team did hula hooping throughout the day at the Future Jobs Fund Shop on Friday, we also managed to get Richard Astle to take part, who managed a mighty 3 hulas, so well done Richard and thank you for taking part. Also thank you to all the people from the Future Jobs Fund Team which was Lee Wyer, Gary Conder, Russell Leigh, Lucy Wilsher, Natasha Haward, Jody Watts, Nadine Tatlow, Farhanah Majothi and Danielle Wagner for you great efforts.

Sports Relief also included a hula hoop celebrity guessing game which was won by Becky Thompson who guessed that Jenson Button did the most hulas and this made £30 for charity.

We also did a raffle on the Friday, with the prizes being drawn on Monday 22nd March. The raffle was a great success as we managed to sell over 600 tickets which made over £100. The raffle included many great prizes including a 20 litre mini fridge which Allison Sunley Won.

Asta Remezaite – Project Support for the Peterborough City Council Neighbourhoods Team

Asta Remezaite was unemployed for almost a year before being offered the position of Project Support within the Peterborough City Council Neighbourhoods team through the Future Jobs Fund. Asta began her new post on the 22nd February 2010.

The Neighbourhoods Team works closely with the local communities within the city to help identify the needs and issues of the residents. Asta and the team achieve this by liaising with the residents, arranging events and conducting regular environmental patrols and audits. They then find solutions to eradicate these problems by providing residents with the advice and facilities to tackle them themselves or if necessary, alongside the council. As her role develops Asta will also devise and implement these solutions, as well as working closely with the Neighbourhoods Management Team to help local events become more sustainable.

Since Asta started she has particularly enjoyed “attending various meetings and events such as the community planning event and meeting the local police.” All of which “has proven to be of great interest, I have it enjoyed very much ’’.

Asta added “that I should mention I am a single mum of two little girls, one of which has a disability.’’ She felt that this job was good for her because “it gives me the flexibility to attend the various appointments for my daughter, it is fantastic to be able to have such a great job and be able to care for my two children’’.

When asked about the Future Jobs Fund scheme, Asta had this to say “being given such a big opportunity has been great. I would have not been able to get a role like this before, due to my lack of experience. So to now be given the chance to do this job and gain the valuable experience needed means so much to me as it could help me gain permanent work in the future, which is all down to the Future Jobs Fund scheme’’.

The team are also hosting a raffle with a wide range of donated prizes to be won, including a 20 litre mini fridge.
